A Round of Applause for Our Around the Bay Supporters

Wind and rain couldn’t dampen the spirits of nearly 9,000 runners and walkers who crossed the finish line at Hamilton Harbour on Sunday, April 12, for the 132nd running of the Around the Bay Road Race.

Thanks to the generosity of our corporate teams, healthcare workers from St. Joe’s, grateful patients and community members, more than $480,000 has been raised to date, with donations being accepted until next week.

First place male 5K finisher Jack Gregory finished with a race time of 14:53, while first place female finisher Stephanie Nevison finished with a race time of 17:11. In the signature 30K, Phil Parrot-Migas sprinted into the first place male spot for the third year in a row in just 1:39:34. The top female in the 30K category was Asia Dwyer running with a time of 1:54:55.  Congrats to all of yesterday’s winners and to Anna Lewis and the Bay Race team on another exceptional event.

Among the sea of thousands of racing bibs were more than 180 St. Joe’s staff decked out in customized navy technical running shirts generously sponsored by HMECU. This year, our Hospital teams, helped by a $50,000 matching fund, raised a tally of more than $175,000 for the Hospital where they are proud to work.

A heartfelt thank you also goes out to Carmens Group CEO, PJ Mercanti, (who took on the role of Community Champion for St. Joe’s this year) and Team Carmens Group who raised more than $108,000 for the Hospital, while Joseph S. Mancinelli and a team from the Labourers’ International Union of North America (LiUNA) were the top fundraising team, raising over $130,000. All funds raised will help to purchase essential healthcare equipment—something that often isn’t funded by the operational dollars St. Joe’s receives from the province.

As the race ended on Sunday, our Hospital emerged as the true winner thanks to the generosity of our participants, supporters, donors and volunteers. Thank you for helping equip St. Joe’s for tomorrow.
