Drew Hauser Didn’t Just Have a Stone in his Shoe, He Had Them in His Kidneys, Too.
Earlier this year, Hamilton resident and avid runner Drew Hauser found out he had kidney stones in both his left and right kidneys. If there’s one thing people know about kidney stones, it’s that they can be incredibly painful. But thanks to the care Drew received at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton, he says his experience filled him with hope, health and gratitude.
From diagnosis to treatment, surgery and recovery, Drew says the St. Joe’s Urology and Day Surgery teams were there to support him every step of the way.
“From the moment I was assigned Dr. Lambe as my urologist, I knew I was in good hands. He quickly put a plan into action, arranging numerous scans, X-rays, and ultrasounds to get a clearer picture of my condition. Each appointment was not only efficient but also infused with empathy and care,” shares Drew. “It might sound strange to say this, but I even had a genuinely great experience undergoing surgery. I think the healthcare professionals at St. Joseph’s must take a course in empathy—because they’ve turned it into a superpower!”
Drew understands how fortunate we are to have access to world-class care right here in Hamilton – and not just from his recent patient experience. In his day job, Drew is an architect at the local firm mcCallumSather and has experience designing hospitals and medical facilities.
Now, fully healed and rested, Drew has decided to take part in the 131st Around the Bay Road Race taking place on Sunday, March 30, 2025. He’s tackling the classic 30K route while raising funds for the Hospital that cared for him when he really needed it.

About the Around the Bay Road Race & St. Joseph’s Healthcare Foundation
The Around the Bay Road Race is the oldest race in North America – even older than the Boston Marathon. For 131 years, tens of thousands of participants have been taking to the streets of Hamilton to run around the bay and back again. In 2005, the Bay Race became a signature fundraising event for St. Joseph’s Healthcare Foundation. Over the past 21 years, more than $5.5 million has been raised by Bay Race participants to support patient care and research at St. Joe’s. Supplementary funding through donations is essential during these times when the demand for care outweighs the funding available from the province for critical programs and services. We’re grateful to every Bay Race participant and donor for their generous support of St. Joe’s.
