Our Recently Renovated Emergency Department is Open!

Donors like you helped to fund the $1.5 million efforts to build a bigger waiting room, more private triage bays, and a dedicated offloading area for EMS and Ambulances

On August 6, 2025, St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton opened the doors to its recently renovated Emergency Department (ED). St. Joe’s is home to the busiest ED in the city that sees more than 70,000 patient visits each year. (That’s up to 200 patients every single day.) With the generous support of our community and the vision of our care teams and redevelopment colleagues, a new space was created to focus on patient privacy, comfort, and reducing wait times.

While we hope you won’t need the services of our ED any time soon, should you find yourself there, here are some of the renovations you’ll see:

• When you arrive, you’ll find a larger waiting area built to accommodate more patients and their loved ones.

• Our new triage area will streamline assessments while giving patients more privacy to tell our compassionate care teams what brings them in today.

• More patient assessment bays will help reduce the time between being triaged and seen by doctor.

• A dedicated offloading area for ambulances and EMS will support direct patient transfers and help with patient flow.

• A new integrated security area that will support the safety of our community, care teams, patients and families, too.

“The meaningful improvements to our emergency department will support the high-quality, compassionate care we provide to patients every day by providing more privacy, more security and a better experience for those who come to us in their times of need,” said Dr. Andrew Healey, Chief of Emergency Medicine at St. Joe’s.

We’re grateful for the vital role our many community members and supporters played in making this renovation possible.

“Support for this project came from every corner of our community: grateful patients, corporate and family foundations, estate gifts and funds raised through events like the Around the Bay Road Race, the St. Joe’s Gala and the St. Joe’s Golf Tournament. If you’ve ever wondered how your 5k run, your round of golf, or your night out at our gala helps our Hospital, these renovations to the emergency department are one very tangible way. We’re grateful to the donors who’ve made this project possible,” says Sera Filice, President & CEO, St. Joseph’s Healthcare Foundation.
