Patient Comfort & Kindness Grants: The ‘Little Things’ Make All the Difference

With the help of the Ever Hopeful Fund, we were able to provide 71 grants to bring comfort and kindness to patients in 65 different programs and departments at our Hospital!

Over the summer, Hospital staff submitted applications to our Patient Comfort & Kindness Fund for grants of up to $5,000 to help cover the costs of those ‘little things’ that are not eligible for funding through operational budgets but go a long way in providing comfort to the patients St. Joe’s serves.

These grants are made possible through thoughtful donations from our community and an anonymous donor known as the Ever Hopeful Fund. Over the past four years, the Ever Hopeful Fund has generously supported the program, and this year, they increased their donation to $200,000 allowing us to fund nearly every request we received!

During the season of giving, we thought it would be nice to share some of the amazing projects funded through our Patient Comfort and Kindness Grants this year. Together, we’re making holiday wishes come true for so many of our Hospital departments and the patients they care for.

Urgent Care

Our Urgent Care Department at the King Campus has received $5,000 to improve the patient experience as they wait for diagnosis, treatment and care. These funds will add TVs to pass the time, a phone charging station to keep in touch with loved ones, and a department walker to help patients safely get to where they need to go. Additionally, the children’s waiting area will be re-stocked with activities to keep little ones busy, and the baby changing stations will be updated to make the space more comfortable for families. Each of these items were chosen with the purpose of making it a little bit easier for patients to cope during the stressful time of an urgent care visit.

Addictions Services

Our Men’s Addiction Service has received a grant of $3,000 to provide essentials and recreation items to their patients. Many of the clients who access this service are not housed and have minimal personal items, so these funds will help to purchase items like socks, undergarments, and deodorant to promote dignity during the care process. The grant will also provide craft supplies and games to further engage patients in non-substance related activities and build healthy connections with others, which are key components of recovery.

Similarly, Womankind Addiction Service also has been granted $1,500 to purchase recreational items to support face-to-face interactions that increase community and cultural engagement. Some of the funds will also help to purchase Galaxy Projectors that will be used during meditation and yoga groups to help to promote relaxation and reduce stress levels in patients during their residential treatment program.

Birthing & Special Care Nursery

The Birthing Unit at the Charlton Campus will be receiving $2,890 in total, allowing them to purchase new breastfeeding pillows and abdominal binders to support patients after the delivery of their newborns. Additionally, personal care supplies will be stocked to help serve mothers who may not have their own. To support the birthing process, heating pads and salt lamps will be now provided, creating a more calming environment for those in labour.

Here’s a complete list of the 71 amazing projects funded through our Patient Comfort and Kindness Grants in 2024.
