Education & Training
As a leading academic health sciences centre affiliated with the world-renowned McMaster University and Mohawk College, St. Joe’s is dedicated to teaching and training the healthcare professionals of tomorrow. That’s why right inside our Hospital, we’ve created The Centre for Education, Learning and Simulation (CELS). The Centre focuses on world-class standardized patient protocols and is home to exciting new capabilities in high-fidelity patient simulation. Serving residents, trainees and practicing clinicians from all disciplines, CELS is a centralized resource that provides state-of-the-art facilities and equipment to educate our care teams through methods that may begin with basic clinical skills training and advance to computerized immersive simulation exercises.
Trainees will have the chance to perform procedures and “operate” on high-fidelity mannequin “patients” in a safe and controlled environment. Residents are encouraged to test drive laparoscopy and endoscopy simulators; try their hand with a catheter insertion model, and leverage virtual reality, create 3D printed kidneys, utilize virtual simulation, and point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) technology to build the hands-on skills that will complement their academic, scientific and anatomical knowledge.
